Health Technology Assessment (HTA)

Aim: To deliver information about the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests.

Funding: No fixed limits on duration or funding, but value for money must be demonstrated. Pilot studies or internal pilots within the study are welcome.

Process: Two-stage process. The first stage focuses on design and feasibility. The process can take over 12 months. There is a 25% success rate for second-stage submissions.

Criteria: Applications will be judged on the following criteria:

  • deliverance of measurable health gains and/or benefits for the NHS
  • importance of the research question to the NHS (a good literature review is essential)
  • the skill mix and experience of the team, including a trial manager (if running a trial).
